If you are interested in a family event that requires you to meet at a designated point according to family's instructions, you will need to pay for your own transportation. However, if you have difficulties with transportation, it is advised that you make a note of this when you sign up for the event, and discuss a solution with the family in advance when you are contacted by them.
As long as you and your friend have accounts of your own, you can sign up for a family event together. However, if the family sets a limitation on the number of students they wish to host, it is up to the family to select the student.
If you are not a native speaker, talking to a host family is a great opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese. You can start by introducing your hometown, for example where it is, what the weather is like, what language you speak, what kind of food you often have, and you can also chat with the host family about your impressions of Taiwan.
It is up to you whether or not to bring a gift. If you decide to bring something to the family, a small souvenir of your own country would be an ideal choice. Expensive gifts should be avoided.
Having dinner with a host family is a great way to experience culture interaction and practice your Chinese language skills, and if possible, you can learn Taiwanese or local dialects. If you know how to cook, you may also share your hometown cuisine with your host family. Tips about dining with Taiwan family are included in the student handbook.

The LMMF Host Family Program provides you with the flexibility to initiate events to be held in different regions. For example, if you are a student living in southern Taiwan and wish to learn about the history of Dadaocheng, you may initiate a two-day visit to Dadaocheng on the Matchbox. If a family in the north is interested in your event and is able to show you around, he/she can sign up for it. The more information you provide in the event application the more possibilities you will be matched.
It is important to note that you will be responsible for your own transportation costs for the cross-region event.
Once there are students signing up for events, the family will review student's information first and then select the student. Please note that one event may attract more than one student to sign up for and It is up to the family to decide which student they wish to host.
