International education has rapidly developed in recent years as the outcome of the trend of globalization. Universities and higher education institutes in many countries are competing to provide various study opportunities and programs to attract students globally. Thus recruitment of international students has become an important mission for universities in Taiwan as it brings significant opportunities for higher education institutes to increase the diversity and multiculturalism of campus, broaden the international perspectives of domestic students, and enhance the international competitiveness of the graduates.
In response to the increasing number of international students, a project office of Network for International Student Advisors (NISA) was established by the Ministry of Education in January 2011, to integrate and implement student service and advising standards and procedures for universities, encourage universities to establish an evaluation and award process to constantly improve their advising service, and found a complete supporting network for international students. Consequently, through positive student experience and feedback, more students will be attracted from all over the world to study in Taiwan.
In support of international student advisors to acquire adequate advising capabilities, NISA provides a real-time information platform and organizes annual professional development programs and workshops featuring important aspects relating to international student’s life and study in Taiwan. In addition to providing assistance to international student advisors and international students, universities are encouraged by the Ministry of Education to enhance their student service by strengthening their facility and creating a supportive and friendly campus through annual delivery of the International Student Service Awards.
The objectives of NISA:
- Establish an information platform for international student advisors and international students
- Organize professional development programs and workshops
- Compile international student handbooks
- Organize overseas student workshops
- Provide inquiry service for overseas students
- Promote Light a Match Meet a Family - LMMF Host Family Program
